Levels

No gi. Four levels.

A level is defined by what you can demonstrate.

No gi, always

We train no gi. Every player has a uniform, a fitted training top and shorts in their league's colours.

You train the way you play. Academy members buy the uniform when they sign up. It is optional for Rec.

For your first day, a t-shirt and shorts is fine. Bring a mouthguard.

League Jiu-Jitsu uniforms in Rec bronze, Academy silver and Pro gold

The four levels

01

Beginner

You are learning the sport.

You are learning the sport. The positions, the transitions, the escapes and the submissions. Every week covers one position and you work through all four. This is where everybody starts, and there is no time limit on it.

02

Intermediate

You understand the sport.

You have a fundamental understanding of the sport. You know where you are in any position, what your options are, and where they lead. You are starting to feel confident and well rounded rather than reliant on two or three things that work.

03

Advanced

You meet the standard.

Advanced is not a judgement call. It is a measured standard, based on your ability to execute against Intermediate players. Every round you play is recorded — which position, which game, how often you score and from where. You can see your own numbers at any time and you can see exactly what the standard requires. When you meet it, you are eligible, and a coach confirms it. Nobody is promoted because somebody likes them and nobody is held back because they are quiet. The number is the same for everybody and it is public. Advanced players are the most experienced in the room. At this level you are refining your game rather than building it.

04

Pro

You are among the best, and you want to compete.

The competition team. Advanced players in the top one percent who want to compete against other League teams for money. It is earned, not selected. Most people never go here and that is completely fine.
