How we teach

Built to learn faster.

Jiu-Jitsu is traditionally taught as a collection of techniques. We teach position first.

The two approaches

Jiu-Jitsu is traditionally taught as a collection of techniques. You learn one today, another tomorrow, another next week. After a year you have a large collection and no framework, and you are expected to work out in sparring how any of it fits together. Most people never do. They find two or three things that work and repeat them.

We teach position first.

The method

We start from a position.

One position a week. You learn where you are, what both people are trying to do, what your options are, and where each one leads. From the top and from the bottom.

By the end of the week you have a map of that position: what you can do, what they can do, and how you get out or get on.

The classes

Four days, four angles.

Instruction runs four days a week, Monday to Thursday. Every class that week works on the same position, and each one takes a different angle on it.

Positional control

Holding the position once you have it, and keeping the other person where they are.

Escapes

Getting out when the other person has the position and you do not.

Transitions

Moving from that position into the next one, and knowing which ones connect to it.

Submissions

Finishing from the position.

We teach all relevant techniques from both the top and bottom positions. You are not only learning what to do when things are going well.

Then you test it

Game day is built on that week's position.

Scoring means doing the thing you were taught, and doing that exact thing is worth double.

You are not left to discover whether it works. You find out that week, with a score on it.

It is measured

Every round is recorded.

Not just whether you won — which position, which game, how often you scored and from where.

Progress stops being a feeling. You can see you score in seven of ten rounds passing the guard and one of ten getting out of a pin. That tells you what to work on, and it tells your coach the same thing.

Nobody has to guess how they are doing.

It keeps refining

Positions come round again.

Each time, your numbers from last time tell you where to put your attention.

One free week. All of it.

Learn the position with everybody else through the week, then play on game day with your name on the board.
